Under the administrative supervision of the Dean, Libraries and Instructional Services, and the functional supervision of the Technical Services Librarian and the Library Technical Services Supervisor, this position catalogs, orders, processes, and maintains the library collection and the Integrated Library System, Millennium. This is a 10 month position (August 1 - May 30).

Essential Functions:


  1. Performs copy cataloging of print and non-print materials according to national standards (AACR2, LC Classification, Library of Congress Subject headings, MARC coding).


  2. Creates order records for all types of materials and tracks orders through completion. Communicates with vendors, accounting department, and librarians when necessary and works with fund accounts in the ILS as part of acquisitions processes.


  3. Performs processing of materials and item and label creation.


  4. Accurately interprets and implements policies and procedures.


  5. Prepares and submits reports and other information at the request of the supervisor and Technical Services Librarian.


  6. Exercises appropriate independent decision-making in performance of job duties.


  7. Performs additional responsibilities, tasks, and duties as determined by the department supervisor.
Full Time - Hours: 8:00 AM -4:30 PM

Requirements:


  1. Associate's degree, preferably from an LTA program, or LTA certificate


  2. Minimum two (2) year's work experience in a library technical services department.


  3. Excellent communication skills.

Library Assistant II - Cataloging



  • Uses standard bibliographic data, internationally established rules, and local or current cataloging practices to edit and update bibliographic records for library materials in all formats. Verifies the accuracy and maintains the integrity of the bibliographic and authority records in the OCLC and Harper library databases. Works with all Library departments to maintain Harper Library database consistency.

  • Exports edited bibliographic records (copy cataloging) from OCLC to Harper library database using a computer interface. Inputs bibliographic data devised as original cataloging by librarians.

  • Performs bibliographic searches for materials in all formats using OCLC and the Harper library database.

  • Oversees and verifies the physical processing of all materials.

  • Does extensive authority work to maintain uniformity in the database; searching and loading authority records for all new headings.

  • Stays knowledgeable of cataloging practices.

  • Provides new information to appropriate staff as needed. Provides assistance to students, librarians and faculty as needed.

This position is responsible for updating and exporting media material records (videos, audiorecordings, websites, etc.) on the OCLC and Harper library databases. Duties include creating basic bibliographic cataloging records for media using internationally established rules and using local or current cataloging practices to edit and update bibliographic records for media. Verifies the accuracy and maintains the integrity of the bibliographic records in the OCLC and Harper library databases. Ongoing projects include catalog maintenance related to weeding, barcoding, and item record creation. The ideal candidate will exhibit an openness to change and a willingness to learn about emerging AV formats and how to catalog these new and varied formats.

Requires working knowledge of AACR2 (latest revision), Library of Congress rule interpretations; familiarity with LC subject headings, classification practices, MARC formats and cataloging standards. Preferred: Experience with Endeavor’s Voyager library database.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Associate degree in library technician program or 15 semester hours of college library science preferred.

Experience: Three years library experience and direct experience with a library database system. Hours: 37.5 hrs/wk @ 52 wks/yr.

CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT PARAPROFESSIONAL

Duties will include creating and implementing story times, crafts, reading programs, and other activities that appeal to children 2 months to 12 years of age. The candidate should be able to communicate well with the general public and be versed in customer service. Library work requires physical strength to move books by hand and/or cart. Minimum qualifications: The candidate should be in the process of earning a degree in Early Childhood Education or Library Technical Assistant. Skills such as puppetry, storytelling, flannel board usage, and playing a musical instrument are a plus. In addition the candidate will possess knowledge in standard PC software such as the Microsoft Office Suite. The candidate will need to effectively search the internet and use on-line databases to assist the public.

The Library Cataloging Specialist is responsible for organizing and supervising the copy cataloging and classification of materials acquired for the Oakton Library collection. Responsibilities include performing copy cataloging using OCLC and CARLI I-Share/Voyager systems; supervising, hiring, and training staff in copy cataloging, processing books, and other technical service duties; performing quality control and bibliographic maintenance of records on the Library's CARLI/I-Share Voyager system; working with library faculty and staff to coordinate collection maintenance; directing original cataloging assignments to Library faculty catalogers as appropriate; compiling statistics; and ordering and maintaining cataloging area supplies as needed

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree and at least one college level cataloging course or an equivalent combination of education and experience or LTA is required; three years of library experience, with a minimum of 6 months of copy cataloging and one year of supervisory experience, is required.
