Spring Reference Course Update

Hello everyone! I hope your Fall semester is going well and that you're getting ready for Spring registration.

As some of you may know I'll be out on leave for most of the Spring semester. Because of this our wonderful instructor Susan Gibbermann has agreed to teach LTA 232: Reference and Information Services. Many of you know Susan and have taken courses with her in the past. She teaches Library Materials and has also taught LTA 232 many times in the past.

Library Clerk Position Announcement

Title: Customer Service Clerk I

Salary: $9.00 - $12.00 per hour wage range

Hours:
16 hours per week, part time, year round. Weekdays, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays required.

Description of Duties:
Supports circulation functions
Consistently applies appropriate Customer Service Department policies and procedures
Checks out 10 non-AV items to a patron with no problems in one minute
Retrieves and checks out 12 DVD’s in 3 minutes
Retrieves and checks out 12 CD’s in 7 minutes
Checks in 10 books in two minutes
Checks in and checks for proper contents of 12 AV items in 6 minutes
Efficiently and effectively collects overdue fines and lost item payments
Renews library items accurately and according to policy
Efficiently places patron holds for materials
Register library patrons according to library policy and issue library cards: creates a new patron record in Millennium in two minutes; enters patron information, takes the patron’s photo, and prints a library card in two minutes
Efficiently answers basic library services and directional questions
Effectively constructs a competent and complete search of the library catalog to meet patron’s needs
Effectively and efficiently assists patrons with computer questions
Deals with questions and problems with the photocopier and other equipment
Maintains shelves and files in an orderly condition
Answers the telephone within three rings as needed
Participates in outreach activities in the community
May efficiently copy, collate, label, or file as necessary
Other duties and projects as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Pleasant personality, able to work with a diverse public and staff
Excellent listening and telephone skills
Excellent English communication skills, written and oral.
Good Spanish communication skills, written and oral, a plus
Able to work independently and complete assignments with minimum supervision
Familiar with computer productivity software, integrated library software
Able to accurately type and file, alphabetically and numerically
Able to accurately handle and account for money
Able to reach 6 foot bookshelves, as well as floor level bookshelves
Able to handle books and other library materials
Able to move heavy book carts

Title: Children’s Reference Assistant

Salary: $15.00 per hour
Part-time, 16 hours per week, year round; daytime, evening and weekend hours required

Waukegan Public Library serves an ethnically and culturally diverse community of approximately 90,000. We are seeking an outgoing, service oriented staff to learn and grow in the profession, in a stimulating and challenging environment.

Description of Duties:
Works the Children’s Reference Desk serving children through 8th grade, efficiently answers patron questions in person and over the phone
Effectively searches the library catalog and library databases to meet patron needs
Efficiently assists patrons with computer questions
Deals with questions and problems with the photocopier and other equipment
Familiar with popular children’s materials for reader’s advisory
Efficiently locates items on the shelves
May assist in the Early Learning Center
May plan and/or present programs as assigned
Checks lists of titles in library catalog
Participates in outreach activities in the community
Other tasks as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor degree
3 years experience working with children from birth through 8th grade
Pleasant personality, able to work with a diverse patron and employee base
Excellent English communication skills, written and oral.
Conversational Spanish skills necessary
Familiar with computer productivity software, integrated library software
Familiar with internet resources and search strategies
Familiarity with children’s literature a plus
