About REFORMA
Since 1971, REFORMA has supported the active recruitment of bilingual and bicultural librarians to meet the information needs of the Spanish-speaking community. The REFORMA Midwest Chapter provides financial assistance to encourage and enable Spanish speakers to pursue a career as a library technical assistant.

About the Juan Manuel Giron Scholarship
Thanks to the generous donation of Mr. Giron Reforma Midwest Chapter has established a scholarship to be awarded for the 2011/2012 academic year, commencing in the Fall.

Who should apply?
Any current or newly entering library technical assistant in the extended Chicagoland area may apply for this scholarship. An application will not be considered unless there are two letters of recommendation postmarked no later than midnight, July 25, 2011 for the 2011/2012 academic year. Must provide proof of enrollment to an accredited LTA program. Full-time status is not a requirement.


Amount
One scholarship award of $500 for the 2011/2012 academic year.

Eligibility
Open to all LTA students who are Spanish-speakers and interested in serving Latinos or the Spanish-speaking. The scholarships are not restricted by age, sex, creed, national origin, or minority group.

Qualifications
Applicants must show evidence of commitment to a career in libraries and the potential for high academic standing. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of and desire to serve the Spanish- speaking community. The recipients must display character and leadership which are essential for success both as a student and as a professional.

**NOTE: Before scholarship funds are disbursed, recipient must be accepted to an accredited LTA program in the Chicagoland area and provide proof of enrollment.


Application Procedures
Applicants must submit the following:



  • Official copy of most recent college transcripts (photocopies will not be accepted)

  • Current resume accompanied by a cover letter

  • Two letters of reference from professors, employers, librarians or other professionals (excluding family) who are well acquainted with the applicant's educational background, intellectual abilities, and personal character.

Additional Information
Award recipients will be notified prior to the awarding of the scholarships. The Juan Manuel Giron Scholarship MUST be used within the academic year following notification of the award, and the recipient must be enrolled in an LTA program. Students who have been awarded a scholarship but do not use it during the year for which it was awarded, must return the award and re-apply for the following year or later.

Job Opening - Library Services Technician

Job Description: NOTE: ONLY ELECTRONIC APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED. Under the administrative supervision of the Dean, Libraries and Instructional Services, and the functional supervision of the Technical Services Librarian and the Library Technical Services Supervisor, this position catalogs, orders, processes, and maintains the library collection and the Integrated Library System, Millennium. This is a 10 month position (August 1 - May 30).

Essential Functions:


  1. Performs copy cataloging of print and non-print materials according to national standards (AACR2, LC Classification, Library of Congress Subject headings, MARC coding).


  2. Creates order records for all types of materials and tracks orders through completion. Communicates with vendors, accounting department, and librarians when necessary and works with fund accounts in the ILS as part of acquisitions processes.


  3. Performs processing of materials and item and label creation.


  4. Accurately interprets and implements policies and procedures.


  5. Prepares and submits reports and other information at the request of the supervisor and Technical Services Librarian.


  6. Exercises appropriate independent decision-making in performance of job duties.


  7. Performs additional responsibilities, tasks, and duties as determined by the department supervisor.
Full Time - Hours: 8:00 AM -4:30 PM

Requirements:


  1. Associate's degree, preferably from an LTA program, or LTA certificate


  2. Minimum two (2) year's work experience in a library technical services department.


  3. Excellent communication skills.


  4. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and Windows.

Desired Qualifications:




  1. Experience with Millennium library system.


  2. Coursework or working knowledge of RDA.


  3. Ability to lift 25 pounds.


  4. Bachelors degree or graduate course work in cataloging.
Salary: $21,671 (minimum)

Electronic Products & Services (EPS) Assistant

American Theological Library Association

The American Theological Library Association (ATLA), a high-tech professional association of theological libraries & librarians that produces electronic products in all fields of religion & theology, has an opening for a part-time scanning position. The position offers a chance to learn about scanners, scanning software & creation of preservation and access level digital images and PDFs. Located in downtown Chicago near Willis Tower, the position offers a flexible schedule of 15-20 hours per week within 6AM–6PM weekdays working in a collegial culture.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include scanning journal issues for the online ATLA Serials (ATLAS) collection. Primary tasks include inventory, collation, disbinding, scanning & processing of journal issues. Other tasks include copying images; quality testing of images & full text; & preparing full text utilizing OCR software. Opportunities may arise to assist with other EPS products & services.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum requirements: Detail-oriented person who can concentrate on the task at hand & provide consistent work when conducting repetitious tasks; physical ability to turn pages & to operate a manual paper cutter requiring 20 lbs. of pressure; familiarity with computers; & some college level course work.

Preferred Qualifications:

Desired: Scanning software knowledge; serial publishing patterns knowledge; digital preservation knowledge; familiarity with Photoshop, Polyview, KOFAX Capture; BCS-2 software; MS Outlook; MS Excel & MS Word.

Harper College Library LTA II position search reopened

Library Assistant II - Cataloging



  • Uses standard bibliographic data, internationally established rules, and local or current cataloging practices to edit and update bibliographic records for library materials in all formats. Verifies the accuracy and maintains the integrity of the bibliographic and authority records in the OCLC and Harper library databases. Works with all Library departments to maintain Harper Library database consistency.

  • Exports edited bibliographic records (copy cataloging) from OCLC to Harper library database using a computer interface. Inputs bibliographic data devised as original cataloging by librarians.

  • Performs bibliographic searches for materials in all formats using OCLC and the Harper library database.

  • Oversees and verifies the physical processing of all materials.

  • Does extensive authority work to maintain uniformity in the database; searching and loading authority records for all new headings.

  • Stays knowledgeable of cataloging practices.

  • Provides new information to appropriate staff as needed. Provides assistance to students, librarians and faculty as needed.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
