Fall Classes

If you haven't registered for Fall courses this is just a reminder to do so soon. As of right now Library Materials is already full. There are still a few seats left in Cataloging (6) and Library Public Services (4).

Also - if you know anyone who would be interested in starting our program Intro has plenty of seats available. Urge everyone you know to register!

Essay Contest to attend Computers in Libraries Conference

The Federated Search Blog is sponsoring a writing contest that asks entrants topredict the future of federated search. As lead author of the blog, my goal for the contest is get our industry creatively and purposefully thinking about our destiny and I would love to hear from fresh voices.

We're asking entrants to submit an original, unpublished essay in English and of no more than 1,500 words. Entrants can comment about such issues as the role of Google, the type of features federated search will include, how the open source movement will impact the industry, whether there will be an entirely new paradigm, or wherever their own predictions take them. Essays will be judged by a panel of noted industry experts including Marshall Breeding, Roy Tennant, Miriam Drake, Carl Grant, Judy Luther, and Peter Noerr. Essays will be evaluated based on writing quality, originality, andvision.

We feel there's a compelling reason to enter: in addition to cash prizes of$500, $250 and $100 to the first, second and third place winners, the first place essay will be published in Computers in Libraries and the author willpresent the scenario at the Computers in Libraries Conference in Spring2009. Travel expenses will be paid by Deep Web Technologies, who is also providing the cash prizes. It's a great way for newcomers to the industry to establish themselves.

Library Technical Assistant, Roosevelt University: Roosevelt University seeks a dynamic, service-oriented LTA to oversee all aspects of our Schaumburg campus circulation operations. As part of public services, this position provides paraprofessional research assistance to students and faculty in a culturally diverse setting by: conducting initial reference interviews; managing print and electronic reserves; communicating user policies to patrons; collecting statistics, preparing monthly reports and maintaining up-to-date procedures. Responsibilities include training and supervising library support staff in circulation activities, including stacks maintenance and the use of the integrated circulation module. Provides back-up for Interlibrary Loan using OCLC, Ariel and document delivery; troubleshoots equipment; assists in special projects.

Added Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and LTA or equivalent library experience required. Must have excellent communication skills and ability to problem-solve, multi-task and attend to detail. Working knowledge of an integrated library circulation module, preferably Voyager. Supervisory experience a plus. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Available to work 1-2 evenings p/wk, some Saturdays. Full time, 35 hours p/wk. Salary starting at $28,000 per year.

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school education with 1-2 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Basic computer, software skills preferred.

Job Purpose:

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position are to assist in the daily operation of Learning Resources and the Information Commons.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions:
1. Perform all front desk duties using computerized system:
a. Checking in/out of monographs and serials.
b. Shelve and help maintain 2-Hour Reserve collection.
c. Shelve serials and monographs
d. Input new patron records or update existing patron records.
2. Answer phone in a professional manner and/or route calls appropriately.
3. Answer email questions in a professional manner and/or route messages appropriately.
4. Assist patrons in locating materials.
5. Obtain mail; send mail; deliver/pick up interdepartmental mail.
6. Perform duties assigned by supervisors and library staff as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic library and/or clerical experience.
  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create a courteous and pleasant first impression of the Library/Information Commons.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and library patrons [students/faculty/staff].
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, especially in Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Flexibility to deal with multiple or unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously.

    Working Conditions:
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Limited physical effort required.
