Reaching Forward Conference Opportunity

Hello everyone,

This year I have an exciting offer from the coordinators of the Reaching Forward Conference and Illinois Library Association. If you don't know, Reaching Forward is a yearly conference specifically for library staff (or LTA students!) in academic, public, school, and special libraries. It will be held this year on May 4th, 2012 at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. For more information on the conference visit their website:
http://www.reachingforward.net/conference.php. The cost to attend this event is usually $125 to register, but here's where the wonderful opportunity comes in.

There are six open slots for volunteers to work at the Reaching Forward conference. By volunteering to assist (more details below), the conference registration fee will be fully covered. This includes a continental breakfast, keynote speaker, exhibits, programs and lunch with a book bag filled with note paper and pen. There is a $13 fee for parking at the Stephens Convention Center which you would be responsible for.

There are six slots available (I will update as the slots are filled):

Conference Assistants for programs – you will be given a form to record attendance for the program and any comments attendees might have (too cold, positive/negative about speaker, etc). Also, most speakers like to introduce themselves, but some might want an introduction (this will be worked out ahead of time). Make sure the speaker’s equipment is working and let conference staff know if the speaker needs assistance. Agree on a signal to let the speaker know he or she has five minutes left. You can select one of the sessions below (one person per program):

  • Two Book Minimum: The Evolution of the Youth Services Information Desk (Session 2 – 11:30 to 12:30) Slot Filled
  • The Adaptability App (Session 3 – 2:15 to 3:15) Slot Filled
  • Recognizing and Embracing Autism within the Library Setting (Session 3 – 2:15 to 3:15) Slot Filled
  • eReader or Tablet: Which for What (Session 3 – 2:15 to 3:15) Slot Filled

Parking Assistant (for early birds) Slots Filled - help in the parking garage. Suggest to conference visitors to pay for their parking before they leave the garage to avoid long lines at the end of the conference and help everyone to understand they need to keep the parking ticket (used to leave the garage) and keep receipt of payment (for travel expenses). Once it gets close to the opening you can join in for the registration/networking and continental breakfast and relax and enjoy the rest of the day. Two people needed.

If you are interested, please email me at achernaik@clcillinois.edu. Include your name and contact information as well as your top two choices for the slot you would like to fill (i.e. which one of the sessions OR a parking slot). Please do not take a spot if you are unsure if you can attend. If you participated in this program last year I will accept your interest/application but preference will be given to new folks. If I do not fill all the slots then I will fill them with students who have participated before.

If you are selected, I will send you directions on next steps. You MUST check your email for more information once you are chosen. We had some problems with communication last year that I want to make sure does not happen again.

Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to be a part of a conference designed specifically for you and your future profession.
