Reach Forward and Volunteer!

Have you heard of Reaching Forward? It's a great conference just for LTAs, and is always a fun and informative day. Check it out at: http://www.reachingforward.org The Reaching Forward Planning Committee is looking for several volunteers to act as Conference Assistants during this year’s conference. The duties of the assistants include helping to direct attendees around the convention center during the initial arrival time and assisting each program speaker. Conference Assistants will be assigned to two or three different programs depending upon the number of volunteers – one for each time slot. Lunch is provided at no cost and of course there is no registration fee for the conference. Consider volunteering for this fun and worthwhile event. The Assistants are a tremendous help in making the Conference a successful day, and this is a great opportunity for you to see what Reaching Forward is all about. If you are interested in being a volunteer, email Carol Dolin, Programmer at Indian Trails Public Library District (355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling, IL 60090) at cdolin@indiantrailslibrary.org

Win Cash for Your Essay!

Has your community college experience been an important influence in your life? If so, consider entering the 2007 Paul Simon Student Essay Contest, sponsored by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA). This is an opportunity for students to win a $500 scholarship for the fall 2007 semester. All currently enrolled students are eligible to participate. The essay must be brief (less than 500 words), typed, double-spaced, and address the theme "How My Community College Has Changed My Life." The theme can be used as the essay's title, or students can create their own title related to the theme. Entries will be judged on the basis of writing style, clarity of expression, and relevancy to the topic. Selection and Scholarship Entries will be reviewed by a committee, and one essay will be chosen to represent CLC in the statewide competition. The winner of the CLC competition will also be recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting, and will receive a recognition plaque and read the winning essay. The winner in the state competition will receive a $500 cash stipend, and will be invited to attend the ICCTA's awards banquet in June 2007 in Springfield. All essays must be received in the Office of the President, Room A207, by 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2007.

Are you interested in an online BA in Information Studies?

Northern Kentucky University is considering starting a new BA degree program in Information Studies. It would be a broad based program designed to develop competencies in information management including organizational systems for record and knowledge databases, strategies for effective retrieval of relevant information sources, and assessment techniques for analyzing applicability of specific information resources. The university contacted me to ask if any LTA students would be willing to help them assess interest in this program by completing a market survey. If you are willing to respond to their survey, it is located at the following link: http://access.nku.edu/oca/informationstudiessurvey/library_student.asp The deadline for feedback is February 17.
