Job Title: Library Clerk
Reports To: Administrative Director, Learning Resources
Status: Non-Exempt (Exempt/Non-exempt)
Date: June 16, 2008

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school education with 1-2 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Basic computer, software skills preferred.

Job Purpose:

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position are to assist in the daily operation of Learning Resources and the Information Commons.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions:
1. Perform all front desk duties using computerized system:
a. Checking in/out of monographs and serials.
b. Shelve and help maintain 2-Hour Reserve collection.
c. Shelve serials and monographs
d. Input new patron records or update existing patron records.
2. Answer phone in a professional manner and/or route calls appropriately.
3. Answer email questions in a professional manner and/or route messages appropriately.
4. Assist patrons in locating materials.
5. Obtain mail; send mail; deliver/pick up interdepartmental mail.
6. Perform duties assigned by supervisors and library staff as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic library and/or clerical experience.
  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create a courteous and pleasant first impression of the Library/Information Commons.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and library patrons [students/faculty/staff].
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, especially in Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel.
  • Flexibility to deal with multiple or unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously.

    Working Conditions:
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Limited physical effort required.
