Reaching Forward Registration Open

Registration is now open for the 2012 Reaching Forward Conference, which will be held Friday, May 4, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. This year's conference features a keynote by James Feldman of Shift Happens, and an Author Keynote from the ever-popular Al Gini.
Reaching Forward offers a full-day of programming for library staff at all levels and includes a continental breakfast and plated lunch.

Nominations are currently being accepted for Reaching Forward's two awards --
the Doyle Award and the Oberman-Rich Award. The Doyle Award recipient
receives a one-year ILA membership and full registration, plus expenses, to
attend the ILA Annual Conference, not to exceed $800. Oberman-Rich
recipient(s) receive free registration to the current year Reaching Forward
Conference, an overnight stay at the Reaching Forward conference hotel, $50 for

Library Information Specialist Endorsement - Further Clarification

Some clarification on my prior post is in order. The Library Information Specialist (LIS) endorsement can only be earned by students who are already certified teachers in Illinois. Here's an example: a teacher who has taught 3rd grade for some time would like a change. She would love to be her school's librarian, but needs an extra credential: the LIS endorsement. To qualify for this endorsement, the teacher must take 24 credit hours of library classes and pass an exam. We've had a number of students over the past several years who have done this. However, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has now made a new rule that half the of 24 credit hours have to be graduate level courses. This will take effect in February 2012.

If you are not a certified teacher who wants to earn the LIS endorsement, this news does not impact you. There is an urgency to the post, but only for a few. So sorry to have alarmed some of you unnecessarily. As always, if this is unclear, please email me.

Library Information Specialist Endorsement - Important Changes from the ISBE

Effective February 2012, the ISBE will make a change in the requirements for earning the Library Information Specialist (LIS) endorsement. Half of the 24 credit hours of coursework will need to be taken at the graduate level. This means that getting an endorsement entirely with CLC coursework will no longer be possible. The Regional Office of Education in Lake County has confirmed this. Here is a link to the ISBE info: http://www.isbe.net/certification/requirements/endsmt_struct_eff_020112.pdf

If you are already doing coursework for the endorsement, it is imperative that you go to the Regional Office and apply for the endorsement asap. They will identify the coursework that you need to complete and allow up to a year for you to finish under the current guidelines.

It is highly unlikely that the graduate schools will accept our courses to meet any of their requirements. This is of particular concern when it comes to prerequisites. Just as our Introduction to Library Science is a prerequisite for every subsequent LTA course, it the grad schools will likely have a foundations course that works the same way.

This is tough news. CLC LTA has been a cost-effective and geography-friendly pathway to earning the LIS endorsement. Unfortunately, that option will be more complicated. Please call with questions.

Practicums Abound for Spring! Practicum Students, Read On!

Are you ready for practicum? LTA 276 (2 credit hours) and LTA 278 (3 credit hours) are the Supervised Field Praciticum which are required for the LTA Certificate and A.A.S., respectively. You must have completed 21 hours of LTA coursework and have the permission of the LTA Dept. Chair to register. I have already received several phone calls from student who are seeking out and arranging their practicums for Spring 2012. If you haven't begun the process, please do so before time gets away from you!

Begin by reading the practicum information on the LTA website: http://yyz.clcillinois.edu/lta/Practicum.html This should answer the basic questions. The three forms which are necessary are also posted there. Take the initiative to think about your interests and where you would like to work before approaching a librarian about a practicum.

This semester, two public libraries and a high school library hosted LTA practicum students. So far for next semester, your classmates have done an awesome job reaching out to arrange their placements. One student will be in an academic library. Another has three libraries offering projects of different types. Others have their plans in the works but not yet finalized. Wow!

Requirements:

Brookfield Zoo - Practicum Placement for Spring - Hurry!

Here's an awesome opportunity for a spring practicum! It's at the Brookfield Zoo!

Chicago Zoological Society Brookfield Zoo opened in 1934 and added a library in the early 1960’s. It boasts 8,000 volumes and 150 periodicals, including electronic resources. The library is a full service library which supports all the departments at the zoo—Animal Programs, Animal Behavior, Keepers, Marketing, Development, Corporate Sponsorship, HR, 600 volunteers and the President’s office with research, interlibrary loan, circulation, cataloging, archival research & preservation. It is a great special library because it is a little bit of an academic library, public and business library all rolled into one.

Internship Available - Glenview Public Library

The Glenview Public Library has an opening for a Marketing Intern, with special focus on website development and content management, in the Communications Department. The Glenview Public Library opened a new 85,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in October 2010. The Communications team is building a new website to reflect the Library’s new brand and support its many new services.

The Marketing Intern supports all aspects of the daily operations of the Communications Department. The primary focus of the position is the new website development nd maintenance, which includes, but is not limited to, research and content management. This internship presents a unique opportunity to assist in the branding of a major community institution, to gain first-hand experience in website migration, and to promote/plan programs that are earning the Library the reputation as the cultural center of downtown Glenview.

The ideal candidate has:
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and the Adobe Suite of programs. Web skills are especially valuable.
• A working knowledge of social networking and a point of view about how to best use it as an educational and marketing tool.
• Experience in marketing, public relations, event coordination, and/or non-profit environment.
• Ability to work both as part of a strong team and independently, to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines, and to multi-task, all with efficiency and attention to detail.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Research, recommend, and manage content for the development and maintenance of the new website.
• Other duties will depend on the Intern’s skill set and objectives for their progress in this position.
• Above and beyond, there is opportunity to assist the with the Glenview Public Library’s marketing/public relations functions and adult enrichment program management, including press release writing/distribution, special event/program coordination, display and art exhibit planning, proofreading, and the varied administrative/production functions of the Communications Office.

The REFORMA Midwest Chapter provides financial assistance to encourage and enable Spanish speakers to pursue a career as a library technical assistant.

About the Juan Manuel Giron Scholarship
Thanks to the generous donation of Mr. Giron Reforma Midwest Chapter has established a scholarship to be awarded for the 2011/2012 academic year, commencing in the Fall.

Who should apply?
Any current or newly entering library technical assistant in the extended Chicagoland area may apply for this scholarship. An application will not be considered unless there are two letters of recommendation postmarked no later than midnight, July 25, 2011 for the 2011/2012 academic year. Must provide proof of enrollment to an accredited LTA program. Full-time status is not a requirement.

Amount
One scholarship award of $500 for the 2011/2012 academic year.

Eligibility
Open to all LTA students who are Spanish-speakers and interested in serving Latinos or the Spanish-speaking. The scholarships are not restricted by age, sex, creed, national origin, or minority group.

Qualifications
Applicants must show evidence of commitment to a career in libraries and the potential for high academic standing. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of and desire to serve the Spanish- speaking community. The recipients must display character and leadership which are essential for success both as a student and as a professional.

**NOTE: Before scholarship funds are disbursed, recipient must be accepted to an accredited LTA program in the Chicagoland area and provide proof of enrollment.

Award recipients will be notified prior to the awarding of the scholarships. The Juan Manuel Giron Scholarship MUST be used within the academic year following notification of the award, and the recipient must be enrolled in an LTA program. Students who have been awarded a scholarship but do not use it during the year for which it was awarded, must return the award and re-apply for the following year or later.

The American Theological Library Association (ATLA), a high-tech professional association of theological libraries & librarians that produces electronic products in all fields of religion & theology, has an opening for a part-time scanning position. The position offers a chance to learn about scanners, scanning software & creation of preservation and access level digital images and PDFs. Hello everyone,

This year I have an exciting offer from the coordinators of the Reaching Forward Conference and Illinois Library Association. If you don't know, Reaching Forward is a yearly conference specifically for library staff (or LTA students!) in academic, public, school, and special libraries. It will be held this year on May 6th, 2011 at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. Mini Scholarship Opportunity for Reaching Forward 2010

Spring Break is upon us! Also upcoming on April 30 is the 2010 Reaching Forward Conference. This conference is specifically designed for library staff in academic, public, school, and special libraries. We also have one LTA Advisory Board member on the program committee as well as at least one soon-to-be graduate of the LTA program. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet your peers and attend some fun workshops throughout the day. Here's the program brochure for more information on the sessions and location.

Currently, registration is $125 plus the cost of parking. The College of Lake County LTA program always has a booth at this event where we provide information on our program to conference attendees. If you'd like to attend the conference but are concerned about the cost consider one of the two mini-scholarships I'm offering to current LTA students.

I need two students who will help me man the LTA program booth at the conference. You can share your experience as a student with others who might be interested in our program. In exchange for about three hours of your time that day you'll each receive $75 towards your costs of attending (about half the cost of registration and parking). Below is an idea of the booth schedule that would be required (conference begins at 8:00am).

To provide friendly, courteous service to Library patrons and to maintain Library circulation routines for resources and equipment in conjunction with established procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Circulate library materials in WorkFlows, the Library Automated System (SIRSI).
Process new library patron records using WorkFlows, the Library Automated System (SIRSI). Update and maintain confidential patron records in WorkFlows database.
Refer library users to Reference Librarians for research assistance.
Assist users with photocopiers, microfilm/fiche, library AV equipment, and computers.
Assist users in locating library resources and equipment.
Maintain an orderly public services area by shelving, shelf-reading, shifting collections, cleaning, equipment maintenance, and moving furniture, as needed.
Collect and record library fines and fees for overdue and lost library materials. Maintain confidential patron records of fines and fees. Reconcile overdue fines between library patron record, Library, and Registration.
Collect money for printing and provide change for photocopiers.
Answer telephone inquiries.
Physically ready Library for daily operation. Open and close.
Occasional lifting and moving of books and carts.
Inventory.
Perform Library security.
Prepare records, reports, and statistics related to circulation activities and public services on daily and monthly basis.
Maintain an inventory of circulation, reserve, and interlibrary loan supplies and forms. Initiate orders and replenish supplies.
Process overdues. Run monthly Overdue Report and format in Microsoft Word. Create, verify, and distribute Overdue Notices. Develop and update Overdue Policy and Procedures.
Process interlibrary loan requests in accordance with interlibrary loan guidelines. Process incoming and outgoing periodical, book, and/or audio-visual requests. Verify MCC patron requests (staff, faculty, student, and community borrowers); locate holders in Liason or WorldCat and order via Carli or OCLC online ILL database. FAX request when necessary. Renew ILL materials for both MCC patrons and ILL patrons. Assist the Director of Library to develop, maintain, and update ILL Policies and Procedures.
Process Reserve Materials. Add Reserve Materials to the Library Reserve Module. Maintain Reserve Collection, update and remove materials when necessary. Assist the Director of Library to develop, maintain, and update Reserve Policies and Procedures working within the Copyright Guidelines.
Interview, hire, and train student workers. Supervise daily functions of student worker.
Check in periodicals using Library Automated System (SIRSI). Prepare periodicals for shelving by attaching barcode, strip, and property label. Maintain periodical shelves.
Additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalent. Some college background desirable.

EXPERIENCE: Two years related experience.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Basic computer skills.
Typing, filing, telephone communication skills.
Ability to do detail work.
Ability to communicate effectively with students, community borrowers, faculty, staff, and administration.
Ability to use judgment in performing circulation duties.

Reaching Forward 2009 -- A Conference for LTAs

It's a conference planned especially for library support staff, and it's such a great day that many who are not support staff want to attend also! In fact, Tom Rich, who is a valued member of our LTA Advisory Committee, is one of the founders of this wonderful conference. This year, Reaching Forward is on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont Illinois. After breakfast and a keynote address, three sessions with several program choices are offered. This year's keynote speaker is Michael Stephens, Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. He will speak about how libraries can become more hyperlinked whiles still staying connected to their foundation and values. Ella was born at 12:10 a.m. on January 27, 2009. She weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz. and measured 20.5" long. Anne and Ella are both doing well. Anne commented that Ella looks just like her father. They are all at home now, and Ella's parents are enjoying every minute with their new treasure.

Reminder on Drop and Reinstatement

Hi all,

The last drop for the Fall 2008 Semester will be conducted overnight on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Students who have not made payment arrangements by close of business on Monday (the cashier's office will be open until 8 p.m.; online payments will be accepted until midnight), will have their registration cancelled.

If you are dropped you'll receive an email and must then complete a reinstatement form prior to 9/16/08. This is a two step process that will involve making arrangements to pay at the Cashier's and then going to admissions to be re-enrolled. If you wish to be reinstated in classes, please must complete the reinstatement process by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16. When contacting the cashiers, you must be prepared to do one of the following:

Pay in full by cash, check or credit card.
Enroll in the FACTS tuition management plan online.
Make special payment arrangements with the Cashier’s Office if extenuating circumstances make it impossible for you to pay in full or enroll in FACTS at this time.

A financial aid application is not enough to reinstate you; you must already have a financial aid award that will cover the cost or make other arrangements to pay.

I urge you to settle this before the drop so that there are no issues. If you do not complete the form prior to the 9/16 date you will not be allowed back into class - and we would miss you.

Welcome to the beginning (almost!) of the Fall 2008 semester. I'm back in the office and will begin responding to phone calls on Monday during the day. Thanks for your patience.

A couple notes:
